Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices that originated in ancient India over 5,000 years ago. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit word yuj, meaning "to yoke" or "to unite" reflecting its core goal of connecting the mind, body, and spirit. Today, an estimated 300 million people worldwide practice yoga, making it one of the most popular wellness activities on the planet.
This type of yoga is gentle and the pace is slow, which makes it a good choice for beginners. Vinyasa is another yoga style that can also be used to describe other types of yoga classes. This style incorporates synchronized breathing into the physical practice and the series of poses are done more vigorously.

These two schools deviated from Patanjali’s belief and instead focused on both the formless type of consciousness and using the physical body to achieve the so-called enlightenment. Both tantra and hatha teach that there is a Higher Being that could reside in each individual and detachment from this Being could result in suffering and much pain.
